Sky Blue Sky Nonesuch Just every once in a while a great band makes an album that lives up to just about every expectation (you never should have had in the first place) and then some. |
| This is one of those once-in-a-whiles. Jeff Tweedy continues his already sparkling songwriting career with possibly his best work, an assault of deep, emotional and wholly unforgettable songs. No over leveraging here; it seems as if the man sees no end in sight when it comes to crafting new, unique melodies, and he never strays too distant from the Wilco sound to do so. Sky Blue Sky takes a different approach than the band’s last effort, A Ghost is Born, loaded with brisk, soothing and insatiable stuff for the duration. There’s far less of a nod to the longer, spacey and noisy direction A Ghost is Born took. Keeping more of a lid on the album’s epic rockers, Wilco will make you hold your breath and hope songs never end while you yearn to hear the tremendously uplifting reprises again and again. Take “Impossible Germany” and “Side with the Seeds,” very progressive and explosive at the end, but not for long. While it may seem as if they end just as they get churning, upon further examination you will find that sometimes less is more. This album is Wilco’s thesis explaining why. | | |
