Child Abuse Lovepump United Subtlety has never been a frequent quality in Nintendo-core spazz rock, and judging from the stark cover art of Child Abuse’s self titled album this is a trend definite to continue. |
It takes quite a sinuously abstract collective to call a splicing of a chucky doll head onto a rigid ebony sculpture enough inclination as to the nature of their craft. But with their effort Child Abuse has just done that, ripped the head off one musical entity and shoved an even more violate noggin onto the bloody stump. CA is a trio defined by the hysterical command of Luke Calzonetti at the helm of keys; his circuitous outbreaks of synth take the form of anything from car alarms in torment to the menacing of techno hornets buzzing in your ear.
Calzonetti’s scant vocals of growls and squeals along with Tim Dahl on bass and Oran Canfield on drums invoke a cacophony of defilement the likes of which cause support group formation. While the band brandish a noxious interplay of complex timings and odd key syncopation, even more impressive is the fact that such a deranged but calculated sound is embodied by only three individuals. Dahl and Canfield demonstrate throughout their occasional capacity for savvy jazz rhythm arrangements, but won’t hesitate to disappoint their namesake by abusing all dexterity available to them.
