I’m not sure if I get the whole Maroon 5 thing. They’re popular with the young ladies no doubt, in the same way Backstreet Boys -- and the like -- were all the rage back during the boy band heyday. But this quintet plays its own instruments and poses like polished-looking rockers in front of a giant neon letter “M” on the cover of this disc.

Listening to Clinic brings to mind Radiohead, had they come along during the ‘60s psychedelic heyday. That’s because much of this disc sounds like Thom Yorke leading The Seeds. It’s a place where reckless musical abandon and brainy lyricism somehow coexist. The singing is desperate, but the guitar work is oftentimes garage-dusty and nearly out of control. |

Arcade Fire is a beautiful enigma. You may not always know what they’re singing about, but they make you emotional every time. Neon Bible, on the surface, appears to be a rant either for or against religion. It doesn’t solely concern God stuff, mind you. But religion certainly plays into it. |
